I (Miranda) was at Powell’s this weekend, and I was there alone (!) because I was technically working. Still, as soon as I grabbed the book I needed for work, I drifted over to the pink room, which is a wonderland of children’s literature. We’ve had some sweet feedback from listeners about the episode we made with kid lit superstars Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen (of
). Making that episode, hearing from some of you about your own feelings about beloved books for kids, and then being in this room at Powell’s that’s nothing but aisles and aisles of incredible children’s books was a really nice, joyful kind of feeling. There are so many rich, beautiful books for kids of all ages out there, and steeping in a room full of them for a few minutes was real boost. Highly recommend going to your nearest bookstore and doing the same!I thought I’d share a bit of what I saw and felt really excited about; I wonder what kid books you’re excited about lately?
First, I was shocked / thrilled to find that there is a seventh Clementine book! We thought there were only six and that we had said goodbye to this beloved series — but no! We still have one more book of Clementine goodness!
Just a great concept all around.
I want Spooky Lakes for ME. My birthday is April 30th.
Frankly also for me — my kids always seem mildly weirded out by the Moomin stories I impose on them. But I care not! What is childhood without Tove Jansson?
They had to fit TWO medals on this gorgeous cover — sold.

As I write this I realize I am extremely swayed by a cover. Anyway, would expend a fair amount of energy to convince my kids to read this one with me!
For little kids, we also just picked Berry Song up at the library, and now I want to buy it so we never have to part with it. I did that thing where I teared up a little as we read the ending and felt all embarrassed and tender, which was jarring because Nellie had already moved on to the next thing (screaming for candy).
I read Mysterious Benedict Society when I was a kid! The whole series is fantastic, I highly recommend it.
I keep hoping my kids will one day like Tove Jansson as much as I do, too! I love Bess Kalb's new picture book Buffalo Fluffalo for younger kids. It's a sweet story about worrying about fitting in and finding friends, and the illustrations are colorful and evocative. Plus, Bess is just so smart and funny and I love supporting anything she does.
